43343184 2022 - Whale shark or basking shark (Rhincodon typus) in Donsol, Philippines, Southeast Asia. The whale shark, the world's largest fish, is in serious danger of extinction. As the water warms it affects the distribution of species, including larvae and plankton, on which the whale shark feeds. All animals in the food chain will face the threat of changing cycles and the shifting location of their food.Whale sharks are in danger of extinction. Some estimates suggest that populations of this species worldwide have plummeted by more than 50% over the last 75 years. Although they are protected in many countries, they are still caught by the fishing industry, deliberately to sell their fins (shark fin soup is a common staple in some parts of Asia), and accidentally hunted. Whale sharks are also threatened by oil and gas drilling, ship crashes and of course climate change. Photo Credit: Sergi Reboredo/ Sipa USA/ Fotoarena

ny020519151404 Jean Lagarde, 75, known as La Rochelle?s oldest fisherman, in La Rochelle, France, April 4, 2019. A record 1,200 dolphins have washed up on France?s Atlantic coast since January. Scientists blame fishing, but fishermen are pushing back. ?That Sea Shepherd fights against whale hunters in Japan, fine, but that they follow us while we are working and harass us, the small and decent fishermen, because some of us sometimes catch some dolphins? It?s out of proportion,? Lagarde said, referring to the environmental group. (Andrea Mantovani/The New York Times/Fotoarena)
